Who I am
Im Shane- I have spent the last 10 years training dogs. What started out wanting to do things differently with the dog I adopted over a decade ago led me down a path to helping other owners with their dogs.
Over the years while working for a local training company I have help hundreds of dogs and their owners live their best lives together. Not only have owners and their dogs learned skills but they have also gained confidence in themselves and each other.
My training style is based on rewards. Providing a reward that the dog finds valuable can create motivation needed to learn in a fun engaging way. I know a lot of people struggle everyday with different things from their dogs but by creating clarity those pain points can be put at ease or reduced.
Training takes patience, time and understanding. With dedicated time and effort progress and improvements can be seen and felt. These are the Ah Ha moments that owners and their dog have which lead them to doing things they didn’t think were possible.
How I view Dog Training
Dog training is a skill that takes practice to be able to develop much like any other hobby such as learning a second language, a martial art or learning to play an instrument.
For me, I have spent 17 years being a student of Spanish. I went from not being able to say a little to being fluent where now I only speak Spanish in my home with my family. I also practice Brazilian jiu jitsu. When I started as a fresh white belt, again I knew nothing and now 9 and a half years later I am a brown belt who knows a lot about the art.
Taking the time to practice these activities gave me the ability to learn how to use them, to develop abilities to think on the fly and under pressure. I lived a Mexico for 3 years which gave me lots practice and a new understanding in the Spanish language. I have competed in Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournaments as white, blue and purple belt which showed me what I really knew and how to really handle pressure. If I didn’t stick with these activities I would be exactly where I was before I started and would be no where near who I am today. These activities have gone hand in hand with my progression in dog training. Every dog has taught me something new. Every interaction with an owner has adjusted my perspective and has made me the trainer I am today.
